Crochet Shop in St. Louis Park

No one knows when the first person thought of using a single hooked stick to turn a skein of yarn into a huge variety of clothes and useful articles. Crochet does not appear to have been around quite as long as knitting, but it is enjoyed by people across the world. In some historical cases, it’s even said to have saved lives, as it can be learned by young and old alike to create an income where one might not otherwise exist.

In general, crochet is different from knitting because each stitch is finished before the next is begun. Knitting keeps several stitches “open” at one time, which are then “closed” at the end of the row. They have very different resulting textures, except for Tunisian Crochet, which may look like a regular knit.

Crochet Basics

Using minimal supplies, you can make gifts for young and old or goods for sale in most any market. Crocheted items are unique in part because many of the stitches may only be done by hand. It has not yet been mechanized, as has knitting. The possibilities are nearly endless with this vintage art form.

Needle & Skein is your crochet store in the St. Louis Park area. We carry needles, hooks, yarn and patterns for all your crocheting needs. We offer classes for those learning to crochet where you can learn the basic skills and stitches:

  • Chain and slip stitches
  • Single crochet
  • Double crochet
  • Triple (treble) crochet
  • Half-double crochet
  • Reading patterns
  • Yarn tension
  • Hook size and stitch gauge

Advanced Crochet Techniques

When you’re ready to learn different nuances of crocheting, you can sign up for a class at Needle & Skein or join us for a Stitch-A-Long Wednesday evening. Any or all the elementary stitches may be combined to make interesting patterns. With practice, you’ll find whether you prefer simpler or more complex patterns, and may enjoy learning Tunisian crochet as much as the traditional method.
