No one knows when the first person thought of using a single hooked stick to turn a skein of yarn into a huge variety of clothes and useful articles. Crochet does not appear to have been around quite as long as knitting, but it is enjoyed by people across the world. In some historical cases, it’s even said to have saved lives, as it can be learned by young and old alike to create an income where one might not otherwise exist.
In general, crochet is different from knitting because each stitch is finished before the next is begun. Knitting keeps several stitches “open” at one time, which are then “closed” at the end of the row. They have very different resulting textures, except for Tunisian Crochet, which may look like a regular knit.
