Yarn in St. Louis Park

With any skill, it is important to understand the tools and materials you work with to create the quality of project you desire. When working with yarn to create items of clothing, this is especially true. If you use a different sized yarn than the pattern calls for, the finished product will not fit properly.

Yarn Weights

The Craft Yarn Council of America has devised a system to standardize the labeled weights of yarn to aid in selection of yarns and the size of needles to use:

  1. Lace weight – the finest threads for making lace on collars and handkerchiefs
  2. Sock weight – also known as fingering weight – for socks that aren’t rough on the feet
  3. Baby or sport weight – fine and generally very soft – great for baby blankets and clothes
  4. Double-knit (DK) or light worsted weight – used for light garments and kid’s clothes
  5. Worsted weight – named for the town, Worstead in Norfolk, England, known for its 12th century weavers. Aran weight is sometimes included with worsted, but it is slightly heavier and thicker.
  6. Chunky weight – for use in thicker items such as scarves, hats and afghans
  7. Bulky weight –  great for arm knitted blankets which don’t require needles
  8. Jumbo weight – popular for quick projects using arm knitting or finger crochet
